Living and working in the mountains of Bulgaria!

What is the situation with Bulgarian nature?

There is a lot of nature in the Bansko region. That is not surprising, because more than 30% of Bulgaria consists of forests.

There are many hiking trails, mountain bike trails and beautiful nature reserves everywhere in Bulgaria.
But of course there are also the beaches on the Black Sea. Unfortunately, many animals are extinct here.

However, the forest areas are still full of special plants and animals. Think of bears, wolves and many bird species. There are also many insects to be found.

Although nature is under pressure in some places due to, for example, the construction of roads and new cable cars in winter sports resorts, nature in Bulgaria is doing well. There is still a lot of unspoilt nature here and many animal species are also doing well.

National Park Pirin

The Pirin National Park is without a doubt one of the most beautiful and diverse nature reserves in Bulgaria. Here you will find bears, lakes, many trees and plants and various animals.

The climate in the area is high mountain-like with Mediterranean influences. In summer there are often high temperatures during the day, while in winter there is always a lot of snow in the mountains.

There are many rock formations (such as the famous rocks at Melnik), 180 glacial lakes, thousands of (different types of) trees and of course many different animals.
The oldest tree in the area is Baikushev's Pine, which is over 1,300 years old! This tree is named after a forester and is located next to the Banderitsa Camping, along the road from Bansko to the Vihren hut.

Chamois, pine martens, red deer, jackals, wolves, wild boars and foxes live in the area. And then we haven't even mentioned the many insect and bird species!
In short: the Pirin is a dream location for nature lovers and bird watchers!

Hiking, skiing and mountainbiking in the Pirin

But not only nature lovers can indulge themselves here. Hikers, mountain bikers and winter sports enthusiasts will also feel at home here. Although the route markings are not always clear, it is doable for many people. However, some recommend hiring a guide who knows the route well. This is because the rocks can be wet or it can be foggy, which is very dangerous.

There are many hiking and mountain biking trails through the area, but there is more. The international walking route E4 also runs through the Pirin. This route runs from Tarifa in Spain to the Greek part of the island of Cyprus, via France, the Alps and straight through Bulgaria and the Pirin.
This is a beautiful route that is no less than 12,000 kilometers long!

Finally, there are many skiing options in the Pirin. After all, in winter this mountain area is a winter wonderland. In Dobrinishte, Bansko, Predel you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding.
Bansko in particular is very well known as a winter sports destination.

Rila National Park

In addition to the Pirin Mountains, you also have the Rila Mountains, on the north side of Bansko. This is also a special mountain range where many animals and plants can be found.
