Bulgaria is one of Europe's lesser-known gems. Yet you will probably have heard of its beautiful Black Sea coast and seaside resorts such as Sunny Beach, Nessebar, Burgas and Varna. Or Europe's oldest city; Plovdiv, aka the European Capital of Culture.
But you can also ski beautifully in Bulgaria! In places like Pamporovo, Borovets and Bansko, beautiful slopes await you!
Bansko is the largest ski resort in Bulgaria and even in the Balkans.
Bansko is a small town in south-west Bulgaria, located at the foot of the Pirin Mountains. Known for its excellent ski resort, rich history and vibrant culture, Bansko attracts thousands of tourists every year, both in winter and summer.
In winter, you will enjoy excellent ski slopes and cosy après-ski, and in summer beautiful hiking trails and lovely warm weather.
Recently, Bansko was named one of the trending travel destinations for 2025 by Lonely Planet, thanks in part to its affordable prices and combination of traditional and modern attractions.
In addition, the Razlog and Bansko area is one of the most important spa areas in Europe. The hundreds of mineral water springs and thermal baths provide a unique experience and ensure that many tourists enjoy a well-earned relaxing holiday.
This warm water can be found everywhere and is wonderful to drink and bathe in, even in winter. The water is often as warm as 40˙C!
The combination of a ski resort, golf resort (Pirin Golf) and spa resort is unique in the world. Within five minutes you are in the warm pool water or on the slopes!
Bansko offers a unique combination of nature, adventure and culture. It is the perfect destination for travellers who love winter sports, nature, thermal baths and the authentic Bulgarian atmosphere, architecture and cuisine.
Bansko is a town that combines rich history and tradition with modern allure. Today, Bansko is known as one of the most popular ski destinations in Eastern Europe, but its past goes back centuries and reflects Bulgaria's resilience and cultural richness.
The first traces of human habitation in the region of Bansko date back to Thracian times, some three thousand years ago. Archaeological finds indicate settlements and sanctuaries established by this ancient civilisation. Later, the area was influenced by the Romans and Byzantines, who used trade routes through the Pirin Mountains to spread goods and ideas.
During the Middle Ages, Bansko grew into an important trade and craft centre. Its strategic location along trade routes between the Byzantine Empire, the Slavic kingdoms and later the Ottoman Empire ensured economic prosperity. Artisans and merchants in Bansko were known for their craftsmanship, especially in woodworking, icon painting and textile production.
Like many other Bulgarian towns, Bansko fell under Ottoman rule in the 14th century. Despite the repression, Bulgarian identity flourished in Bansko, with secret schools and Orthodox churches preserving its culture and language. The town became an important centre for Bulgarian National Rebirth in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Bansko produced some prominent figures, including Paisii Hilendarski, the monk who in 1762 wrote the first Bulgarian national history: the ‘Slavic-Bulgarian History’.
After Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman rule in 1878, Bansko remained an important economic and cultural centre. In the 20th century, the city began to develop as a tourist destination, thanks to its spectacular nature and convenient location. The construction of modern infrastructure and ski facilities in the 1990s and 2000s transformed Bansko into the main winter sports destination in Bulgaria.
Today, Bansko attracts thousands of tourists every year who come for the combination of winter sports, historical charm and cultural festivals. The historic centre with its authentic stone houses and traditional mehanas (taverns) offers an atmospheric glimpse of the past, while modern ski resorts and events such as the Bansko Jazz Festival put the city on the map as a dynamic destination.
Bansko is a destination that offers plenty of activities all year round. In the winter months it is known as Bulgaria's largest ski resort, while in the summer months Bansko transforms into a paradise for nature lovers.
Here you will discover all about the best activities, the most beautiful sights and the best accommodation!
Bansko is the biggest, best-known and most modern ski resort in the Balkans. In Eastern Europe, only Rosa Khutor in Russia is bigger. In total, there are 75 km of slopes and 14 lifts in Bansko.
The ski season usually runs from December to April.
The resort of Bansko goes from 990 to 2,600 metres.
Skiing and snowboarding are not expensive in Bansko, compared to, say, the Alps. You might then think that the facilities are also less, but this need not be the case.
Nightlife in Bansko is lively, with plenty of bars, restaurants and nightclubs.
Popular après-ski activities include tasting the local cuisine and the famous Bulgarian wine from Melnik, for example.
Near the slopes, there are plenty of opportunities to rent ski equipment.
Below you can see the official slope map of Bansko. The rightmost lift and slope Tsurna Mogila are no longer in use due to avalanche danger.
The resort is Eco-Friendly and has modern ski lifts and facilities, including the Gondola lift connecting the town to the ski area.
Bansko is known for being excellent for beginners as well as advanced skiers.
Skiing in Bansko: some advantages
One drawback is that the resort is not too big and it can be overwhelmingly crowded in high season (during school holidays). This makes for long queues at the Gondola.
Want variety or to avoid these queues? Then you can also join the ski resort in neighbouring Dobrinishte!
Bansko is also known for its beautiful unspoilt nature. Bansko lies on the edge of Pirin National Park.
The nearby UNESCO World Heritage-listed Pirin National Park offers numerous hiking and mountain biking routes through alpine meadows and ancient pine forests.
Popular hiking destinations in the Pirin include mountain peaks Vihren, Bezbog and Todorka.
Is this a bit too much of a challenge? Then you can also just walk to a mountain hut, such as the Yavorov Hut. Or how about one of Europe's oldest trees: Baikuchev's Pine? You can also walk from the Bezbog Hut to Lake Popovo.
These are some examples of beautiful hiking trails that you should definitely have walked once if you love mountains, nature and hiking!
Although there are few real trails, mountain biking is becoming an increasingly popular activity in Bansko. In the valley and in the forests, you can enjoy cycling with beautiful views and on challenging trails!
A great route, for example, is to cycle from Bansko to the St Nicholas waterfall and enjoy nature in a magical place for a while here.
There are opportunities to rent a bike in Bansko, should you not have your own.
Horse riding through nature is also a well-known activity in the region. In Dobrinishte (near the climbing park and near Vukovia), you can go horseback riding through nature with a group. An unforgettable experience!
Not into horses and prefer to go on a quad, buggy or Jeep ride through nature? This is also possible in Bansko!
At Bansko ATV, for example, you can go out with a guide on quads to drive around the countryside.
At other companies in Bansko, you can also opt for a Jeep safari or a buggy.
Bansko is culturally a major player in Bulgaria. Many traditional festivals and traditions are well preserved and are an important part of the life of the locals.
Not only Bansko itself, but also the neighbouring towns are rich in culture and traditions. For instance, Razlog is known for its Kukeri festival Starchevata and Dobrinishte for its international folklore festivals.
Culturally, Bansko has a lot to offer. The old city centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, combines cobbled streets and terracotta roofs with modern amenities such as bars, clubs and restaurants.
Attractions include the Neofit Rilski Museum and the Velyanova House, which provide insight into the region's rich history and traditions.
But that's not all. Many festivals are organised in Bansko every year. The best-known example is of course the Bansko Jazz Festival, but also the Rock Evenings and the Opera Festival.
And are you interested in digital nomads and the digital world? Then be sure to visit the Digital Nomad Fest, organised every year in June!

Although not as strongly present in Bansko itself, the region is known for its thermal baths and mineral water springs.
For those in search of relaxation, there are excellent places to go especially in the nearby village of Banya, where you can enjoy natural hot springs.
Dobrinishte is also known as a spa town. Although it is not yet as developed as Banya, Dobrinishte is a popular holiday destination for many Bulgarians because of its spring and mountain water and the ski resort Bezbog.
In the village, for example, you have the natural pool Alfa Spa & Pool. This open-air pool is full of naturally warm (!) spring water up to 40˙C, so it is open even in winter!
Banya and Dobrinishte are villages that have been frequently visited since ancient times for their thermal baths and the health benefits they offer. Thus, bathhouses have been found from Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman times.
All springs have their own unique composition that offer different health benefits. For example, the water is very good for the skin and reduces skin complaints. Also, for example, the silver water in Dobrinishte is said to be good for the eyes.
This water comes directly hot from the ground and is therefore 100% naturally heated.
The warm water is excellent for bathing in one of the many spa hotels or one of the bath houses, even in winter.
In addition, the water is also just very tasty and healthy to drink!
Well-known spa hotels in the region that have natural thermal baths at their disposal include Katarino SPA Hotel, Pulse Therme Banya and Grand Hotel Bansko.
The combination of mineral springs, pristine nature, a golf resort and ski resorts is unique in the world, making Bansko the ideal holiday destination for many types of travellers!
Bansko consists of two parts: the new town and the old town.
While the new town is also beautiful, Bansko's old town is perhaps the most beautiful and photogenic part of the city.
In this old part, you will find, among others, the Velyanova House, the Neofit Rilski Museum, the Nikola Vaptsarov Museum and Holy Trinity Church.
You will find plenty of narrow streets made of cobblestones and beautiful old houses in traditional Bulgarian style.
Holy Trinity Church (built in 1835) is considered Bansko's main attraction, and not surprisingly so. After all, it is one of the largest Orthodox churches in Bulgaria and has an unusual architecture.
The church resembles a kind of monastery with a wall around it made of large boulders.
The tower is separate from the church itself, which gives a nice view from the street.
You will also find almost all traditional Bulgarian restaurants, the mehanas, in this part. All these terraces create a nice and cosy atmosphere that invites you to come back again!
Bansko organises annual music festivals, such as the international jazz festival in summer. These are all held on the central Nikola Vaptsarov square.
The old town of Bansko is a charming and historic place that provides a nice contrast to the modern ski resort.
There is much more to see in Bansko municipality than just the town and the slopes. Below is a list of villages that are great fun to visit or drive through on a road trip!

This makes it a nice, small-scale hotel where guests love to come back!
